ROCIES: Rose of Culture in E/Elite Sport

Shaping safe and inclusive cultures in elite and esports through the ROCIES model

Overview

The ROCIES project aims to contribute to a shift from a one-sided focus on achievements in high-level (e)sports to a culture where the human beyond the athlete receives more attention. It’s no longer only medals that count, but also the way they are achieved.

Esports deserve the same attention as traditional sports in this context. As the esports sector grows, so do expectations, making it crucial to ensure that athletes and their wider organizations are taken seriously in the move toward a more human-centric approach.

The project revolves around the ROCIES model through which this broader transition can be researched and developed.

Methodology

Focus Area

We examine social inclusion and potentially harmful behaviours in elite sport and esports, focusing on cultural safety, athlete wellbeing, and organisational practices that shape performance and care.

Research Activities

Interviews with esport athletes uncover personal experiences, cultural norms, and challenges in the competitive environment.

Engagement

A physical ‘serious game’ brings together stakeholders to identify, discuss, and address both problematic and positive elements in (e-)sports cultures.
